My friends at school loved FPS games, so I made one so I could tweak it the way we wanted while we were playing it. Using the 3D game engine built-in the Dark BASIC language, Metal Assault was fun to create. It even has a rudimentary AI system and bespoke vehicle physics simulation. It took me 3 years to complete this game, and may friends had fun with it.
Developing Metal Assault was mostly done during lunch breaks, at school: the librarians were very kind with me. They saw my project and my need for time to work on it, so they gave me exclusive access to one of the library's computers to others. I installed the Dark BASIC kit and GIMP on it to develop Metal Assault during every break I had.
I even reserved classrooms to present my game to my friends and to my teachers. They did not understand all the programing stuff, but I enjoyed seeing them play my game during these presentations.
A 3D game needs 3D assets and I understood it very early on. 3DS Max 8 was my best option back then. For sure I had trouble using it at first, but I eventually learned to use it effectively. Aside from this, I learned how to make seamless textures, how to make photomanipulations, how to design a sprite, etc.
